Delray Beach, FL - United States

'In her meticulously constructed paintings, Karen presents the viewer with the zany and mischievous world of cats. While her playful perspectives are amusingly distorted, the narratives created are refreshingly familiar.'

A strained finger began the journey from music to art, and along the way I’ve had one-woman shows, juried exhibits and received awards in watercolors, oils, pastels and photography. I exhibited at the Bar Harbor Gallery in Long Island, NY, Cornell Museum, Images Gallery, Fl, and my paintings are in collections throughout the U.S., the Virgin Islands and in South Africa. Memberships include The Suburban Art League and Art League of Nassau County (NY), Broward Art Guild, Delray Art League and The Artist Guild of the Boca Raton Museum of Art (Signature Member).

As a former concert pianist and teacher, the transition to Art was an exciting journey. My Dad was a commercial artist and illustrator who had passed on and I inherited his supplies and took the name he used (“Zuk”) which is a shortened version of the family name (“Zukoff”). After exploring various mediums and studying with different instructors, I entered my first Art Show and won First Place in Oils. A new career was born! In addition to fine art, I also studied Advertising Art and Design at SUNY and began doing pen & ink renderings for real estate ads, magazine illustrations, houses, boats and pet portraits.

After moving to Florida in 1992 I attended The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale while doing freelance work and Art Shows. I took on a 4 month Photoshop project for Aurafin, the largest karat gold jewelry manufacturer in the world, and soon became their Art Director, where I worked for the next 10 years until I decided to work as a consultant and devote more time to painting.

Although most of my work is realistic I often enjoy exploring a more intuitive, expressive style. Pet portraits, landscapes and animals are favorite subjects, and I’ve been involved in animal welfare groups for many years, donating artwork and graphic design.

Art, like music, takes one on a journey, an exploration of the beauty and pathos of our existence. Whether on the concert stage or at the easel, I always felt the challenge to express that vision through the artist’s touch.
